DENVER – The non-conference season has wrapped up for the Grand Canyon women's tennis and the team now has its eyes set on the Western Athletic Conference. The Lopes look to defend their 2015 WAC title as they have been tabbed as the favorite headed into conference play along with New Mexico State in the WAC Pre-Conference Coaches Poll.
GCU and New Mexico State tied for first place as both teams received three first-place votes. The Lopes concluded their non-conference schedule with five wins, the second most from any team in the WAC, behind Seattle U with eight wins.
It is a crucial weekend for the Lopes with three home matches facing Chicago State, New Mexico State and Seattle U. Out of the 12 matches played between Chicago State and GCU over the past two years, GCU has won both matches, winning 10 of the 12 matches. Last year, GCU defeated New Mexico State 5-2 at the Paseo Racquet Club while the Lopes have swept Seattle U 7-0 the past two seasons.
This will be one of two weekends that GCU will face WAC opponents as it heads to Chicago, Ill. to face UT Rio Grande Valley and Missouri-Kansas City from April 1-2.
The Lopes played exceptional tennis last year during conference, going a perfect 5-0, claiming their first WAC title. All three matches this weekend will take place at the Paseo Racquet Center.
