PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began its 2015 Western Athletic Conference title defense at home with three conference matches beginning on Friday against Chicago State. The Lopes made a statement in their first conference match sweeping the Cougars 7-0, improving to 6-7 this season.
"The girls played great today and it was the perfect way to start conference," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "It was great to see our team dominate on all three courts during doubles and we kept the momentum going in singles."
The Lopes got off to a great start, sweeping all three doubles matches for the first time since Feb. 20 against Southern Utah.
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini was the first team to wrap up its match with a 6-0 sweep on Court 1 and clinching the point for GCU was Alexandra Petrzalkov and Kylie Washuk on Court 2 with the 6-2 win. The "Lana" duo,
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi, closed out doubles with a 6-2 win on Court 3 to close out doubles with a 1-0 lead.
GCU's domination of doubles carried over into singles as the Lopes did not allow a single match to go to a third set. Prudhomme took care of business on Court 1 with straight 6-2 victories over Lorea Gamboa. Baklini capped off a 2-0 day with a 6-1, 6-4 win on Court 3 while Rinaldi dominated Monica Pulgar on Court 5 in a 6-3, 6-0 victory. On Court 6,
Marie Deleval's serve was working that propelled to her a 6-0, 6-1 win.
After a 6-2 win in the first set, Petrzalkov found herself behind in the second set 5-2 but Petrzalkov rallied to take the match in straight sets for the 7-5 win.
"We felt good going into the match but I am proud of the way we took care of business today," Prudhomme said. "(Saturday) is going to be a good test but all the work we have put into the season has us prepared for conference."
The Lopes have a big test Saturday, as they will face New Mexico State, which was tied with GCU in the WAC Pre-Conference Coaches Poll as both were picked to finish first in the conference. Play will begin at 11 a.m. at the Paseo Racquet Club.
