PHOENIX – The GCU women's tennis team suffered a tough loss against WAC conference rival New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon. The Lopes were defeated 4-3 after splitting singles matches but losing the doubles competition point to the Aggies. Grand Canyon falls to 6-8 for the season.
"You can add today's match to another one on a long list of hard-fought battles that made the coaching staff proud," head coach Greg Prudhomme commented. "Unfortunately, we fell just short to New Mexico State who was the other team to beat in the conference."
This is the fifth match of the season in which the Lopes have been defeated by a 4-3 score. Last season, GCU defeated the Aggies 5-2 en route to winning the WAC conference title. The Lopes came very close to taking down New Mexico State again this year.
"It's disappointing and I feel bad for the girls but I know they left everything on the court. With a little more fortune in close situations, the match could have gone our way," Prudhomme added. "We certainly give all the credit to New Mexico State but will continue our program development to stay at or near the top of the conference every time we take the court."
Beginning the match, Alexandra Petrzalkov and
Kylie Waschuk earned a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles but the other two GCU pairs were defeated to give the Aggies a 1-0 advantage entering singles play.
No. 1 player
Tatum Prudhomme continued her impressive season with a 6-7, 7-6, 10-6 decision to earn another GCU point. She improves her singles record to 10-4 this season.
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi also picked up singles victories for the Lopes. Macukat won her match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and Rinaldi made quick work of her opponent at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-1. Unfortunately, no other GCU players were able to close out victories in their matches and the Lopes ultimately fell by the dreaded 4-3 final score.
GCU will be back in action on Sunday morning as it looks to rebound against Seattle U. The match will be played at Paseo Racquet Center and begin at 10 a.m.
