GCU pushes Pacific to the limit in loss

ALBUQURQUE, N.M. – To close out the Mountain Pacific Invitational, the Grand Canyon women's tennis team faced Pacific in a battle for third place. GCU won three singles matches but the Lopes fell to the Tigers 4-3. GCU is now 8-6 this season.

"After going down early dropping the doubles point, we knew that we would have to get the job done in singles," assistant coach Amit Maharaj said. "Our guys fought hard and I am proud of the energy and the fight our guys showed."

The Lopes continue to struggle to win the doubles point as they lost two of three against Pacific. The Lopes knew they would have to come on strong in singles and they made quite the comeback with three wins in singles. After a win on Court 3, putting Pacific up 2-0, GCU stormed back with two straight wins. Mathieu Rajaonah picked up GCU's first win of the day on Court 4 defeating Jose Chamba 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Felix Schueller followed Rajaonah's lead with a victory on Court 2, defeating Miguel Diaz in a tight two set match. Schueller won the first set 6-4 but Diaz wouldn't go down quietly taking Schueller to the distance but Schueller came out on top with a 7-5 win, tying the match at 2-2. Pacific took the 3-2 lead with a win on Court 1 but Meidy Chazeau kept GCU alive with a 6-4, 7-6 win on Court 5 over Alex Giannini.

It came down to Court 6 between Kumara Adavelly and Justin Cvitanovic and Pacific pulled out the three-set win to take the 4-3 victory.

"It was a great experience for our guys," Maharaj said. "It reassured us that we can compete with these teams as we try to get ranked nationally."
