PHOENIX – Behind seven innings of shutout baseball from sophomore Jake Repavich, the Grand Canyon baseball team forced a split of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Gonzaga at Brazell Stadium. The Bulldogs prevailed 21-9 in Game 1 before Repavich, AJ Franks and Mick Vorhof combined to hold Gonzaga scoreless in a 3-0 win in Game 2.
Game 1: GCU fell to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in a 21-9 loss at Brazell Stadium. Redshirt sophomore Ethan Evanko returned to the diamond after tossing only 9.0 innings in 2015. The lefty pitched 0.2 innings allowing six runs on seven hits before being replaced by senior Cameron Brendel. The senior pitched 3.0 innings allowing six runs on seven hits in relief.
After trailing 6-0, GCU tallied two runs in the first inning to open the game. The top of the lineup started the rally for the Lopes after Thomas Lerouge singled to left. Garrison Schwartz followed with a double to deep center to put two Lopes in scoring position. With a hard-hit fielder's choice to third by Brandon Smith, the Lopes scored their first run of the game and put Schwarz 90 feet from home before scoring on a wild pitch, cutting Gonzaga's lead to 6-2.
Looking for a rally, the heart of the lineup continued to hit well with Schwartz, Smith and Greg Saenz each with a homer in the game. Schwartz went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBI. In the fifth, Smith and Saenz had back-to-back solo homers as the Lopes tallied three runs in the inning. Smith was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI and Saenz went 2-for-3 with a home run and a RBI.
Freshmen Tyler Wyatt, Marc Mumper and Preston Pavlica picked up their first GCU career hits Saturday. Wyatt, the 2015 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, singled in the fifth during the Lopes' three run inning. Mumper, pinch hitting for Paul Panaccione singled to get things started for the Lopes' three run ninth.
"It was good. You want to get those guys in during a tighter ballgame," coach Andy Stankiewicz said about the freshmen. "But I was proud of Marc Mumper and Preston Pavlica and Zach Malis. I was proud of what they did coming off of the bench, taking advantage of an opportunity and I thought they did a nice job."
Game 2: On Saturday night, the Lopes earned their first shutout of the year in a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Jake Repavich held Gonzaga scoreless for 7.0 innings, yielding just three hits with four strikeouts.
"It was good to see the guys bounce back in Game 2," Stankiewcz said after Saturday's doubleheader. "Jake Repavich did a great job. We needed that. We needed our starting pitchers to step up and establish the strike zone and stand up there with a little confidence to go after hitters. He did just what we needed in a big way."
GCU hit across its first run of the game in the first inning. After Schwartz drew a walk, Smith singled to left to get the Lopes started. After Brick Paskiewicz singled to left, Schwartz came into home safe at a close play the plate to put GCU up 1-0.
A pair of bunts helped the Lopes score their second run of the game in the fourth. Again in the mix, Paskiewicz got the Lopes started with a double. After a bunt single to put runners on the corners by Saenz, Krysthian Leal followed with an RBI bunt single to score Paskiewicz, giving GCU a 2-0 lead.
Next up, the Lopes are back to the diamond on Sunday vs Gonzaga with freshman Tyler Wyatt on the mound for the Lopes, set to face sophomore Eli Morgan of Gonzaga. First pitch is set for noon MT.
