PHOENIX - The 2016 Grand Canyon baseball season is set to get underway this weekend from Brazell Stadium. The Lopes host Gonzaga in a four-game set, with the series getting started on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The last time the Lopes were in action, they were dog-piling in the infield at Sacramento State, having just clinched the 2015 WAC regular-season championship. The Lopes' 2016 season will feature a 53-game quest to defend their title in the WAC. The conference coaches chose GCU as the favorite to do just that, narrowly edging out Sacramento State in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
Paul Panaccione was selected as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year after batting .376 for the Lopes in 2015, a mark which ranked No. 26 in the nation.
While Grand Canyon returns four of its top five batters from last year's top-10 offense, newcomers will also play a substantial role for the Lopes. GCU's roster features 16 new members, including a Baseball America top-35 recruiting class that features 14 freshmen along with two junior college transfers.
.
The Lopes will roll out a starting rotation featuring senior
Jorge Perez, a pair of sophomores in
Ethan Evanko and
Jake Repavich, and a freshman in
Tyler Wyatt. Perez returns from redshirting in 2015 after posting a 3.43 ERA in 2014, GCU's first year back at the Division I level. Evanko also returns from redshirting in 2015 following a successful freshman campaign in 2014. Repavich is coming off of a 2015 season when he tied for fourth in the country in victories among freshmen with eight. Wyatt will make his GCU debut on the mound in Game 4, coming off of an Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year season in 2015 as a prep.
Gonzaga is picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the West Coast Conference after finishing with a 24-28 overall record last season. The Bulldogs are slated to become road warriors in 2016, with this weekend's series in Phoenix being their first four of 39 road games on the schedule. Gonzaga is led by Mark Machtolf in his 14th season as the head coach of the Bulldogs.
The season opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Brazell Stadium and is one of the two games televised on Cox7 Arizona. Barry Buetel is on the play-by-play, Mike Rooney has the analysis and Kate Longworth is the sideline reporter. The series continues into Saturday, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at noon, and concludes on Sunday with a noon first pitch.
