PHOENIX – The 8-3 GCU men's volleyball team hosts their first home conference matches of the season this weekend. The Lopes will take on MIVA foe Quincy University on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. and again on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. Grand Canyon is 1-1 in the MIVA after splitting matches with Lewis University earlier this season.
Head coach
Matt Werle is excited for his team to resume MIVA play and return to Antelope Gym.
"The conference is very well balanced and every match is going to be extremely competitive and a battle," Werle noted. "We must respect every opponent and bring our best effort to each match."
The Quincy University Hawks are 4-8 this season and are led by eighth year head coach Hadley Foster. Middle hitter Jarrod Kelso leads the Hawks with 97 kills this season and setter Thane Fanfulik has dished out 320 assists. Quincy is currently 0-3 in the MIVA after dropping matches to Ohio State, Lewis, and Loyola-Chicago.
Outside hitter
Gerrard Lipscombe is the reigning MIVA Offensive Player of the Week after his 37 kill performance last weekend in two games against New Jersey Institute of Technology. Setter
Michael Milstein has 265 assists this season and libero
Sky Engleman leads the defense with 93 total digs.
Shalev Saada is second on the team with 81 kills while middle hitters
Ashton King and
Christian Ward follow closely behind with 65 and 55 kills each.
The Lopes will look to continue their three-game winning streak and remain undefeated at home. GCU is currently 5-0 at Antelope Gym. The first match will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12.
