The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will conclude its 2016 campaign in Bakersfield, Calif. as they meet conference opponent CSU Bakersfield its final match of the season. The Lopes will meet the Roadrunners on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. MST.
GCU will look to bounce back after Sunday's double overtime loss to UTRGV and end its season on a high note. The Lopes currently sit in the No.3 spot in the WAC behind Seattle U (6-0-0) and CSUB (4-2-0) with a 3-2-1 record and a .583 win percentage. If the Lopes defeat the Roadrunners this weekend, they will finish in the No.2 spot for the second time since the 2014 season.
GCU Notables
- GCU split its final weekend of home matches. The Lopes shutout New Mexico State 5-0 and fell to UTRGV 1-0 in double overtime.
- The Lopes' offense kept on rolling as they defeated an opponent by four or more goals for the fourth time this season. Friday's victory over NM State also marked the Lopes third consecutive shutout.
- On the weekend the Lopes rattled off 45 shots with 19 on target and five goals. They also held their opponents to just nine shots and three shots on goal.
- GCU currently leads the WAC standings with 16 goals and 2.67 goals per game.
- Milla Benedetti continues to lead the team with eight goals and now sits second in the WAC with the total.
Scouting CSUB
- CSUB is currently 8-9-1 this season and is 4-2-0 in WAC play.
- The Roadrunners went undefeated last weekend and defeated UTRGV (1-0) and New Mexico State (5-2).
- CSUB defeated the Vaqueros in a last second goal to claim the match 1-0. They also dominated the Aggies in a 5-2 finish last Sunday.
- Freshman Sophie Freeman garnered WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for netting four goals in two wins. She scored the game winning goal against UTRGV with just 47 seconds left in regulation.
CSUB Series History Notables
- The Lopes will meet CSUB for the 20th time in program history.
- The Roadrunners lead the all-time series at 6-11-3.
- Earlier this season, GCU defeated CSUB in a 2-1 thriller at GCU Stadium.
- McKenzie Cook netted the Lopes first goal in the 54th minute before the Roadrunners scored the equalizer 25 minutes later. Cook went on to score the game winning goal in the 82nd off a service from Maria Monterroso to claim the match. Cook's pair of goals marked the first time a Lope had scored twice in a match in the 2016 campaign.
- The Lopes finish the season on the road at CSUB for the third time in four years.
