The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will host its final pair of home matches as they welcome conference rival New Mexico State on Friday, Oct. 21 and host UTRGV on Sunday, Oct. 23. Senior Recognition Day will precede Sunday's contest as GCU honors its nine seniors.
GCU will look to continue its winning ways as they meet the Aggies and Vaqueros after a successful road weekend in which they battled to a 0-0 tie with UMKC and shutout Chicago State 9-0 on Sunday. The Lopes currently sit in the No.3 spot in the WAC behind Seattle U ( 4-0-0) and UMKC (2-0-2) with a 2-1-1 record and a .750 win percentage.
GCU Notables
- GCU went undefeated on the weekend for the second time this season when they tied with UMKC (0-0) on Friday and shutout Chicago State (9-0) on Sunday.
- After battling in their second straight double overtime game, the Lopes and Roos ended in a draw after 110 minutes of play.
- GCU had its most impressive offensive contest thus far in a 9-0 victory over Chicago State. The Lopes rattled off 40 shots and Milla Benedetti, McKenzie Cook and Anyssa De Vera all scored multiple goals.
- Cook's pair of goals marked the second time this season a GCU player scored more than once in a game.
- Benedetti continues to lead the team with seven goals and now sits second in the WAC with the total.
- The Lopes are now 6-8-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in WAC play.
Scouting New Mexico State
- New Mexico State is currently 4-10-2 this season and is 1-1-2 in WAC play.
- The Aggies battled to a tie with Utah Valley on Sunday and fell to Seattle U in a 2-1 decision on Friday.
- Forward Aileen Galicia leads NM State with six goals and has tallied 13 points on the season.
- GK Ashley Martin has started in goal for the Aggies this season. She currently has a 1.68 goals against average percentage with two shutouts and 82 saves this year
Scouting UTRGV
- UTRGV is currently 9-5-1 this season and are 1-3-0 in the WAC play.
- The Vaqueros went 0-0 last weekend after hosting WAC opponents Utah Valley and Seattle U.
- Forward Sarah Bonney currently has a WAC leading 10 goals on the season. She's also collected four assists and 24 points this season.
New Mexico State Series History Notables
- The Lopes will meet the Aggies for the fifth time in program history.
- GCU currently leads the all-time series 3-1-0.
- Last season the Lopes fell to New Mexico in Las Cruces in a 2-1 outcome.
- Although NM State jumped to an early lead in the first half, the Lopes got the equalizer goal in the second half before the Aggies solidified the match with a goal as a result of a penalty kick opportunity.
UTRGV Series History Notables
- The Lopes will meet UTRGV for the third time in program history.
- GCU leads the all-time series 2-0-0.
- Last season, the Lopes defeated the Vaqueros 1-0 on the road. GCU dominated the game offensively outshooting UTRGV 17-8, but it wasn't until Madison Cox's late game goal after being assisted by Taylor Layton and Jessica Valadez that GCU solidified the victory.
