KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes in a match against UMKC that ended in a 0-0 tie. GCU's defense was the story of the match as GK
Blakely Fraasch and the backline thwarted 15 shot attempts and nine UMKC corners.
The Lopes improve to 5-8-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference play.Â
How it Happened:Â Â
In a scoreless first half, Fraasch and the backline played lights out defense throughout the first half as the Roos put up eight shots and six shots on goal and drew seven corner kicks. Fraasch continued to make stops and showed her athleticism and strength after she laid out for a huge save after the Roos drew a penalty kick. As a result, GCU and UMKC entered the half at 0-0.
Â
In an intense second half that produced three yellow cards, GCU and the Roos battled for another 45 minutes, but yielded zero points. While UMKC's offense remained on attack and ratted off another six shots in the second half, GCU's defense was relentless making stops, blocking shots and thwarting every Roo scoring opportunity. GCU's offense produced a trio of shots and had good opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net before the end of regulation.
Â
In the following overtime periods, GCU and UMKC continued to go back-and-forth with neither team yielding to the other. In double overtime, UMKC fired off a shot to start the final period of play, Fraasch came up with her ninth save of the night to keep the match scoreless.
The Lopes then mounted a offensive rally as
Rachel Mina fired off a shot that was saved by the UMKC keeper followed by a corner kick. Unfortunately, GCU couldn't capitalize on the corner kick, but concluded the night with a final defensive stand after clearing the box after the Roos kicked the final corner kick of the night with the final minutes ending the contest at 0-0.Â
