BOISE, Idaho – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team opened the season against one of the nation's best taking on No. 59 in the country, Boise State. The Lopes were able to come away with two victories during singles play but the Lopes fell to the Broncos 5-2.

"Playing indoors and on the road is really tough especially against a great time like Boise State," assistant coach Amit Maharaj said. "I am proud of our guys, they showed up ready to play and compete from the very first ball."

After dropping the doubles point, GCU continued to battle and compete in all six singles matches, taking two matches to three sets. GCU came away with the second match completed in singles play with a victory on court three. For the first win of the season,
Alexander Roggenkamp defeated Lewis Roskilly in a 6-3, 7-5 two-set victory.

"Alex did an outstanding job of closing out his match and showed great attitude and effort," Maharaj said.

Boise State would clinch the match after the fourth match completed in singles but to end the day GCU ended with a victory on court six from freshman Mathieu Rajaonah. In his first competition as a Lope, Rajaonah defeated Greg Wischer in straight 6-3 sets for his first victory at GCU.

"Mathieu did a great job staying calm and managing his emotions," Maharaj said. "By controlling his emotions he was able to stay focused and get our second point of the day."
