Men’s defeats Montana State for first win of the season

BOISE, Idaho – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season and it came against Montana State. The Lopes came away winning eight of the nine matches played against the Bobcats. GCU improves to 1-1 this season.
"I am proud of our guys today. They responded after a tough loss yesterday and we came out strong with a lot of energy," assistant coach Amit Maharaj said. "We had all six guys fighting hard in doubles and it carried over into singles."
The Lopes came away with their first doubles point of the season with victories on courts one and two. Felix Schueller and Alexander Roggenkamp picked up GCU's first victory of the day with a win on court over Kellen Bates and Rok Sitar. After Montana State took the match on court three, the deciding match came on court two. GCU's Mitch Maroscher and Adrian Legarreta came up clutch with a victory as the No. 2 team with the close 7-5 victory over Harry James and Dylan Harvala.
GCU carried the momentum it developed in doubles into singles play by sweeping the Bobcats. Freshman Mathieu Rajaonah capped off a perfect weekend in singles play with GCU's first singles victory on court six with the 6-0, 6-1 victory. Legarreta picked up his first win of the season in singles play with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win on court five and giving the Lopes the victory on court two was Schueller with the 6-4, 6-0 win over Alexander Flink to give GCU its first victory of the season.
"As a coaching staff we have emphasized the importance of playing like we are down even if we start singles up a point," Maharaj said. "It keeps the hungry and fired up. We will rest up and get ready for our matches next weekend."
Meidy Chazeau won his first singles match of the season on court four. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Rok Sitar, Chazeau rallied back to win the final two sets 6-3, 10-8.
GCU's will continue its roadtrip to start the season next weekend on Saturday, Jan. 23, as they face Santa Clara.
