FLAGSTAFF – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team continued its four-match road trip as they participated in the NAU Mountain Classic. To kick off the tournament, the Antelopes faced off against Robert Morris and GCU outshot the Colonials 22-4 but Robert Morris capitalized on its opportunities defeating GCU 2-1. Grand Canyon is now 3-4-1 this season.
"We dominated the game, outshot them 22-4 and just could not hit the back of the net," head coach Stevie Gill said. "A very disappointing result given the clear chances we missed."
Grand Canyon controlled possession for most of the first half firing off 12 shots with two on target in the first 45 minutes of play. The Lopes came close to scoring a goal 58 seconds into the match with a free shot from Maria Monterroso from 20-yards out but her free kick went barely went over the crossbar. In the 11th minute McKenzie Cook's shot attempt just inside the box blew past the right post bar as the score remained 0-0. Robert Morris' Antonia Grese had a golden chance to score when Grese was five-yards from goal but GCU's goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch slid in for a sensational save in front of goal to keep the match scoreless. GCU's backline was not pressured much in the first half but when called upon they answered the bell allowing just two shots with one on goal.
Robert Morris struck quick in the second half scoring four minutes into the half with a goal from Cassie Raymond inside the box as Robert Morris took the 1-0 lead. The Lopes responded by continuing to pressure and GCU capitalized in the 59th minute. Milla Benedetti crossed the ball into the box where Taylor Layton was able to get a flick on the ball in the middle of the box for a slow roller past the goalkeeper, tying the match at 1-1.
Brylee Hawkins came close to giving GCU the lead in the 65th minute with a header off a corner kick but the attempt would just go over the crossbar. Two minutes later Hawkins would come close to another goal with a free kick from 25-yards out and Hawkins went far post but the ball would strike the post preventing the Lopes from taking the lead.
With 1:34 left in the game, Robert Morris would take the late lead with a goal from Gabrielle Corrente that proved to be the game winner.
The Lopes will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. against North Dakota for their final non-conference match of the season.
