FLAGSTAFF – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference match of the season with a matchup against North Dakota State. The Antelopes fell behind early and attempted a late comeback but it wasn't enough as GCU fell to the Bison 2-1.

In the 7th minute the Bison scored the first goal of the game from Amy Yang from 10-yards out. Four minutes later North Dakota State would strike again with a goal from Lauren Miller from 25-yards out. Both assists came from Roxy Roemer. The Bison came close to making it three goals in the 14th minute as Britney Monteon had a shot attempt inside the box but Blakely Fraasch came up with a big save preventing another goal. Once again in the 37th minute Fraasch came up with another sensational save as Holly Enderle had a point blank shot in front of goal but Fraasch laid her body out preventing the goal.

GCU was efficient in shooting the first half with five shots for the first half with four on target. The Bison ended the first half with eight shots total with six on goal. The Antelopes found life early in the second half forcing two corners in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Off a corner Madison Cox was able to get a header off inside the box but her attempt went wide.

In the 71st minute GCU would receive a free kick that would be taken by Brylee Hawkins from 25-yards out. Hawkins free kick would be blocked by NDSU's wall where Kelsey Smith would find the ball from 30-yards out and Smith would get a beautiful strike on the ball that would go far post for a goal, cutting North Dakota State's lead 2-1. Martine Gjennestad came close to tying the match in the 86th minute off a corner kick by Milla Benedetti that landed near the far post and Gjennestad would get a shot on goal but the attempt was saved by North Dakota State.

GCU ends non-conference with a 3-5-1 record and all eyes are now geared towards WAC play beginning next week, Sept. 26, on the road against Bakersfield.Â
