Hold a Perfect 5-0 Conference Record
Priscilla AnnoualClosing out conference competition, the Grand Canyon University women's tennis team (12-6) picked up the shutout victory over Seattle U (5-18) for a perfect 5-0 record in conference. The win netted the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season title—the highest conference honor the team can attain during GCU's transition to Division I.
In addition to the title, it was senior day for the Lopes. The squad honored four-year veteran Priscilla Annoual and two-year Antelope Silvia Tumova .
Annoual currently holds a 13-3 record in singles this season with a 46-15 record for her collegiate career. She has competed in the top-slot for the team for three full seasons, as well as more than half of her freshman season. In doubles, she holds a 41-24 record overall. Tumova transfered from UL Monroe for her junior season. She holds a 21-11 singles record during her time at GCU and an 18-7 record in doubles.
"The GCU women's team finished the job today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They had an outstanding season by finishing their regular season play by becoming the regular season WAC champions."
"We can't say enough about the effort they all put out all season long, especially this weekend and the great attitudes they've had," Prudhomme continued. "The experience they gained by some of our tough losses early in the season really helped and they just stayed strong individually as players and as a team throughout the season. They just really deserved this win."Silvia Tumova
GCU swept the doubles matches for the third consecutive match. Annoual and Tatum Prudhomme snagged their ninth straight with an 8-0 win on court one, while Tumova and Alexandra Petrzalkova notched their sixth consecutive on court two. Lana Rinaldi and Lana Macukat earned the final victory with an 8-3 win for their fifth in a row.
In singles, five of the six wins were in straight sets. Annoual defeated Michelle Lui 7-5, 6-2 to extend her streak to 10. Prudhomme and Macukat each earned their seventh consecutive while Tumova picked up her sixth.
Rinaldi had the lone three-set fight against Audrey Scott. Rinaldi won the opening set, but fell short in the second set's tiebreaker. She came back in the third to secure the shutout win.
"It was a nice way to finish it off by getting all three doubles matches and sweeping the singles," Prudhomme explained. "Lana Rinaldi on court six capped it off with a strong 10-point match tiebreaker victory."
"I'm really proud of the girls for the effort they put in this weekend with these last three conference matches and everything they've done the whole season," Prudhomme concluded. "We have the Ojai Independent College Invite to look forward to in a couple weeks to finish everything off."
Grand Canyon will close out their season with the tournament in Ojai, Calif., on April 22-26. A full recap of the event will be available at www.gculopes.com.
