"We needed that (comeback) because good teams win close games," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We could have easily just said forget it, let's come back tomorrow, but that is a sign of maturity as team to understand the game is not over. Answering their seven-spot with three runs in the bottom of the inning is deflating for them. I was encouraged by how we responded."
The Broncs chased GCU starter
Andrew Naderer in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead. Naderer finished his night going 4.1 innings, allowing those seven runs (six earned).
The Lopes rallied for three in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from
Brandon Smith and
Rouric Bridgewater and a sacrifice fly from
Garrison Schwartz.
The Antelopes had taken a 4-0 lead with three in the second inning and one in the third. Bridgewater's two-run double highlighted the three-run second.
Mick Vorhof (1-0) picked up his first career win after tossing 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. The freshman fanned five.
Travis Garcia-Perreira picked up the save, entering the game with two out in the ninth.
"Mick has been real consistent in throwing strikes and making the opponent put the ball in play," added Stankiewicz. "He, like
Jake Repavich, is establishing himself as a very competitive young man. As a coach that is what you are looking for in guys that trust their stuff and are not afraid to throw it in there."
Bridgewater finished the night with two hits and three RBI.
Paul Panaccione and Smith also had two hits to pace the 13-hit attack. It was the 12
th time this season the Lopes have had 10 or more hits.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Coley Bruns is expected to make the start for GCU. Fans can go to
