Grand Canyon dropped a series for only the second time since joining the Western Athletic Conference, today falling in the rubber game, 11-7, to New Mexico State at Presley Askew Baseball Field in Las Cruces, N.M.
GCU's only other WAC series loss was at UTPA last season.
The Antelopes overall record now stands at 22-18, 11-3 in the WAC. New Mexico State improved to 6-29-1, 3-11-1 in the league.
GCU fell behind 4-0 after three innings before rallying to take a 5-4 lead midway through the sixth inning.
The Antelopes tied it up with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a
Brandon Smith two-run single and two Aggie errors.
David Walker and
Paul Panaccione led off the sixth with walks and a
Garrison Schwartz groundout RBI put the Lopes in front by one.
GCU was without the services of
Andrew Naderer this weekend due to an illness and were forced to use a plethora of bullpen arms to try and contain the Aggies offense. New Mexico State, however, was able to collect 18 hits during the game and pulled away with four runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning.
Schwartz and Smith each had two hits to pace an offense that went only 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-8 with two outs.
Jaren Drummond (1-1) suffered the loss in relief of start
Mick Vorhof. GCU used five total pitchers in the game.
"We had a rough today and just couldn't get it going," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We had some opportunities but didn't get the big hit when we needed it. Late in the game we didn't pitch well enough to hold them down and that was a turning point. We are still sitting in a good spot in the conference and will get back at it next week."
Grand Canyon will now return home before heading back out for the second half of this 10-game road trip. The Antelopes will be in Orem, Utah to face the Wolverines from April 24-26. The games can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball.
