Grand Canyon took game one today against Utah Valley, 14-6, before dropping the nightcap, 6-5, at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, Utah.
GCU's overall record is now 23-19, 12-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. UVU's record stands at 13-26, 9-8 in the league.
In game one, a contest that began last night and resumed today after being halted in the fourth inning because of rain, GCU broke a 6-6 tie with five runs on five hits in the fifth inning.
The pivotal Antelope fifth began with the first six batters reaching base, four via hit and two by walk.
Paul Panaccione,
Chad De La Guerra and
Ben Mauseth each had RBI hits, while
Garrison Schwartz had a sacrifice fly and
Brandon Smith was walked with the bases loaded.
GCU held an early 6-2 advantage before the Wolverines rallied to tie the game once play resumed today.
Offensively, Panaccione had four hits and three runs scored, while De La Guerra had three hits and two runs scored.
Thomas Lerouge,
Humberto Aranda, Smith and Schwartz had two hits apiece.
Mick Vorhof (3-0) entered the game today in relief of
Coley Bruns, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings in a winning effort, allowing five hits while fanning four.
"Mick came in and threw strikes and we were able to make some good plays behind him," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "At the plate we swung the bats well, especially in the late innings and played a solid ballgame."
Grand Canyon jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second game of the day, but was unable to hold on for the victory.
Trailing 1-0, GCU plated a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead on a Lerouge RBI groundout and a passed ball that scored Aranda. The Antelopes plated three in the sixth on a RBI single by Mauseth and two-run base knock from Aranda.
Andrew Naderer (3-5) started and was charged with loss, allowing six runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He had held the Wolverines scoreless through the first 5.0 innings before running into trouble in the sixth.
Jaren Drummond threw 2.0 scoreless out of the bullpen for GCU.
The Lopes threated to tie the game in both the eighth and ninth innings, placing a runner on third, but were unable to get the run across.
"We played well for the first six innings," added Stankiewicz. "Andrew was doing great, but he hit a wall in the sixth. We made a few poor decisions defensively, trying to make a great play when we should have kept the ball in front of us. We had our chances after the fast start, but took our foot of the gas a little and it caught up to us."
The two clubs will wrap up this series tomorrow, with first pitch coming at 11 a.m. (AZ time). The game can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats and a video link will be available at www.gculopes.com.
