The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team (10-9) defeated Kansas City (10-11) 6-1 today at the CSU Tennis Courts in Chicago, Ill., to kick off the final weekend of conference competition.
"Today was a great day for the GCU men's tennis program," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "The other top teams in the conference weren't able to beat them that decisive. UMKC was in the NCAA tournament two years ago, so any time you can get a strong win over a team that has been in the tournament is a good sign for the program."
In doubles, the Lopes snagged the doubles point with a 2-1 victory.
Adrian Legarreta and
Philip Kuehnen won on court one 8-3, while
Meidy Chazeau and
Gregoire Balenci replicated the score in their win on court three.
The Lopes finished singles 5-1, winning four matches in straight sets.
Chazeau competed on court four in a three-set match that concluded with him winning the tiebreaker for the third set over Uldis Gaismins.
Alexander Roggenkamp competed in the other three-setter. He won the opening set in a tiebreaker, before falling just short in the second set. He lost the final set's tiebreaker 10-6.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match with the close score that UMKC did have with some of the other conference teams," explained Prudhomme. "The guys did a great job of rising to the occasion and they got off to a great start winning the doubles point and kept the momentum going into singles. We were really happy with today's results and we're looking forward to going out there tomorrow against Seattle."
The Lopes will continue their stint in Chicago tomorrow with their match against Seattle U at 6 a.m. Arizona time. A full recap will be available at
