With a strong win for their last match of the regular season, the GCU men's tennis team (11-9, 3-2) defeated Seattle U (4-15, 0-3) 5-2 today in Chicago, Ill., at the Chicago State Tennis Courts.
"The guys closed out the season the way we wanted them to," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "The guys bounced back quick after a short night to fend off a team who gave us a lot of fight."
In doubles,
Adrian Legarreta and
Philip Kuehnen picked up the 8-1 victory on court one for the first win, while
Felix Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp battled for the 8-6 win on court two.
"We got two out of three doubles to clinch the point, which gave us the doubles point in all conference matches this year," Prudhomme explained. "The guys unofficially established themselves as the best doubles team in the conference, so that was nice."
In singles, Schueller, Legarreta, and Kuehnen each picked up straight set triumphs. Kuehnen closed out the regular season on an eight match win streak and an 11-5 record. Schueller earned a 13-5 record and Legarreta went 15-4 during the season.
Meidy Chazeau fought off  Tanner Berkabile for the three set win on court four, clinching the win for Grand Canyon.
"We're happy that the guys carried on with a great attitude and effort in the way they compete and in doing so they earned an overall winning record, so that's certainly the stepping stones that we want to keep seeing until we're on top of the conference," Prudhomme concluded.
Grand Canyon will travel to Ojai, Calif., for the Ojai Independent College Invite April 22-26. A full recap of the event will be available at
