The Grand Canyon University men's and women's tennis teams competed in a pair of matches today. The women's team (8-6) extended their streak to six with a win over Idaho State (1-8) at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz., while the men's team (7-7) swept Seattle U (3-12) 7-0 for their third straight.
In doubles, the women's squad earned the doubles point with wins on the first and second courts.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won their match 6-3 for their sixth consecutive victory.
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova finished their match with a 6-0 shutout.
"I thought the girls came out today with a positive attitude and good intensity," said assistant coach Amit Maharaj. "Playing four matches in four days you're expected to be sore and tired which leads to players being negative and having a bad attitude but our girls conducted themselves in a professional manner. That positive attitude is something that Greg and I work on with our players for situations like these."
In singles, the Lopes won five out of six matches, only giving up 12 games in the matches they won.
Annoual extended her win streak to seven with her 6-1, 6-2 match against Marian Tangarife. Prudhomme,
Lana Macukat, and
Lana Rinaldi each picked up their fourth straight victory.
"They will rest up the next couple days then get back out on the practice courts later this week to prepare for our conference matches at home next week," concluded Maharaj.
The men's team faced a tough match against Seattle U to pick up their first conference win. In singles,
Felix Schueller and
Philip Kuehnen each had to fend off tiebreakers in the second set to snag the straight sets victories.
Mathieu Ounanian attained his fifth win with a three set match against Matthew Alderson.
"The tennis team battled hard today to put up their first conference win of the season," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They had to fight off a lot of close sets and won two tiebreakers in the singles with Philip at number five and Felix at number one to clinch the win. Mathieu at number six had to go to a third set, but finished strong with a 6-1 win."
In doubles, GCU went 3-0. Kuehnen teamed up with
Adrian Legarreta to defeat the Redhawk's number one pair 8-6. Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp faced a tiebreaker to grab the win on the second court while
Meidy Chazeau and
Gregoire Balenci finished 8-5 on the third court.
"All those close sets and tough wins came after three very close doubles matches so the day started with a good challenge and that challenge went all the way to the end," Prudhomme explained. "To win all seven matches even though they were all tested was really good. It gave us another sign of our improvement after only beating this team 4-3 last year and earning the 7-0 win this year. We'll rest up and see if we can get another good win against Portland State tomorrow."
Grand Canyon's men's team will take on Portland State in Las Vegas tomorrow at 9 a.m. The women will host conference matches April 3-5, opening the weekend against Chicago State at 5 p.m. on the third. All matches will be played at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. A full schedule for the weekend as well as recaps for the events can be found at
