Closing out a successful four-match road trip in Las Vegas, Nev., the Grand Canyon University men's tennis team (8-7) earned their fourth consecutive win with a 6-1 victory over Portland State (5-9) at the Darling Tennis Center.
"The guys stayed strong for their fourth match in three days today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "I was really happy with the continued attitude and effort that the players brought to the court today."
Adrian Legarreta and
Felix Schueller each went 8-0 on the trip between both singles and doubles matches. Legarreta's sweep over Will Cochrane today also pushed his singles streak to 11 wins. Schueller holds a 10-3 record after his win against Ethan Lopez on court one.
In doubles, Schueller teamed up with
Alexander Roggenkamp for their 4-0 stint in Las Vegas, giving them a 9-5 record this season. They won the match on court two 6-1. Legarreta and
Philip Kuehnen defeated Portland State's number one pair with a 6-3 victory.
Meidy Chazeau and
Gregoire Balenci also picked up the 6-3 win on the third court to close out the sweep.
Mathieu Ounanian stepped in on court six to defeat Ian Risenhoover 6-3, 6-2 to take his overall singles record to 6-1. The freshman earned a 4-0 record this road trip.
"I know they were a little banged up and a little extra tired and sore from having a long stretch of matches back-to-back, but that's why we train off court and work hard to keep them mentally tough so they can still perform to their ability on days like this," explained Prudhomme. "It was a great road trip for the guys to come away with four wins."
