The Grand Canyon University softball team (16-14) split its doubleheader at St. Mary's College (10-19) Wednesday at Cottrell Field in Moraga, Calif. The Antelopes came out on top, 6-1, in game one, before falling 4-3 in Wednesday's second game.
"We swung our bats really well in game one and ran the bases hard," said head coach Ann Pierson. "Our defense was sharp and Kailey (Regester) threw a great game (game one)."
Backed by
Kailey Regester's complete-game effort in the circle and a 4-for-4 performance at the plate from
Haley Walker, Canyon topped the Gaels, 6-1, in game one. Regester allowed just one run on six hits en route to recording her sixth win of the year. The right-hander struck out three in her complete-game effort.
GCU put a two spot on the board in both the fourth and fifth innings to cushion its lead.
Bianca Boling delivered a two-run single in the fourth, while
Briielle Breland's RBI single and Walker's RBI double accounted for Canyon's two runs in the fifth.
In game two, the Lopes scored twice in the first and once in the second, but were unable to generate any more offense, falling 4-3 to Saint Mary's.
Nicole Newbury's two-run single in the top of the first highlighted the scoring for the Lopes.
Newbury and
Camree Wartman each had a pair of hits in game two to lead the Canyon offense.
Taylor Nowlin suffered the loss in the circle, entering the game in the fourth in relief of starter
Bailey Bergman. Bergman didn't allow an earned run in three innings of action.
"We made some base running mistakes early (in game two) and that cost us some runs," said Pierson. "Bailey did a good job after the first and Taylor continues to be a force on the mound. Our offense didn't make adjustments in time."
The Lopes will remain in California through the weekend for the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Pacific and gets underway Friday in Stockton. Fans can find the complete tournament schedule and live links to follow the action at
