The Grand Canyon University softball team (18-14) won a pair of games Friday on the opening day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Stockton, Calif. The Antelopes defeated UConn (8-15), 11-2, in game one, before topping tournament host Pacific (9-21), 5-1, in Friday's second game.
In game one,
Bianca Boling hit a pair of home runs to lead the Lopes to an 11-2 run-rule victory over UConn. GCU scored in every inning except the second to earn the six-inning run-rule win over the Huskies.
Boling smashed a three-run shot in the top of the first to highlight Canyon's four-run opening frame. The freshman then blasted a solo shot in the third for her team-best ninth home run of the season. With the two home runs, Boling is now tied for the second-most home runs this season (9) in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
Haley Walker turned in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while
Nicole Newbury and Boling each had a pair of hits.
Bailey Bergman didn't allow an earned run en route to picking up her third win of the season in the circle. The sophomore struck out three in 5 1/3 innings of work.
With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the final frame, GCU's offense exploded with a four-run seventh to lead the Lopes past Pacific, 5-1.
Kelsey Barak singled home Walker in the fifth to put the Lopes on the board and knot the score at 1-1. Barak, Newbury and
Jenna Coates all recorded a RBI in the seventh, while Boling scored on a wild pitch to account for Canyon's four runs.
Kailey Regester went the distance in the circle to pick up her seventh win of the year. The junior allowed just one run in her five-hit complete-game effort.
Kayla Henry, Barak, Newbury and Coates all notched a pair of hits against the Tigers.
The Lopes will take on CSUN at 10 a.m. and Pacific at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on day two of the Louisville Slugger Invitational. Fans can find live links to follow Saturday's action at
