The Grand Canyon University softball team (19-15) split its games Saturday on the second day of play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Stockton, Calif. The Antelopes downed CSUN, 3-2, in game one, before falling to Pacific, 3-2, in game two.
GCU scored twice in the bottom of the third and
Kailey Regester and
Taylor Nowlin held CSUN scoreless through the final six innings to lift the Lopes to a 3-2 victory over the Matadors—who received a vote in last week's
USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll.
Trailing 2-0,
Camree Wartman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second to cut CSUN's lead in half. The solo shot was the sixth of the year for the Canyon second baseman.
Bianca Boling's two-run double in the next inning plated
Kayla Henry and
Haley Walker and gave GCU a 3-2 advantage—a lead they would not relinquish.
Regester hurled the first five innings, allowing just two runs on four hits to pick up her eighth win of the season in the circle. Nowlin was very effective in relief, not surrendering a run, while fanning four. For her two-inning relief effort, the sophomore was credited with her third save of the year.
Kelsey Barak's 2-for-3 effort at the plate led the Canyon offense.
In game two, GCU got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth on a
Brittany Medina RBI double, but the host Tigers plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on another in the sixth to defeat the Lopes, 3-2.
Barak recorded a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to trip the Pacific lead to one, but Tiger pitcher Marissa Young got the next two batters to groundout and strikeout to secure the win for the home team.
Henry's 3-for-4 effort at the plate paced Canyon's offense, while Walker added two hits in four trips to the dish.
The Lopes will close out play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Sunday when they take on UConn at 10 a.m. Fans can follow the action via links for live video and live stats at
