The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team (1-3) swept Western New Mexico (0-1) to net their first win of the spring.
"The guys had a great match today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We were playing a Division II team, but they're a strong Division II team and it wasn't that long ago where we were either losing to them or struggling to beat them."
The day opened with a strong doubles performance for all three pairs, including a shutout victory by
Felix Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp at the second doubles slot.Â
Meidy Chazeau teamed up with
Gregoire Balenci to win the third court's match in a tiebreaker, while
Philip Kuehnen and
Adrian Legarreta finished their match 7-5.
"Today could have been a tricky day, but we actually gained a lot by winning it the way we did—sweeping nine courts including all three doubles," explained Prudhomme.
Grand Canyon won all of their singles matches in straight sets, securing the shutout victory.
"Western New Mexico put up a great fight, so we had to win a number of close sets," Prudhomme continued. "We saw what we've seen in many past seasons with our teams, in that they get better from match to match. They learn from their experience and apply it to the next ones."
"Today they did a good job of coming through some of those close sets that have been slipping away previously," concluded Prudhomme. "There wasn't anybody to single out—all players did great and we're looking forward to more practice and getting out to some more tough matches against Air Force and the Citadel in a couple weeks."
GCU will next travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force on Feb. 13 and the Citadel on Feb. 14.
