The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team (2-3) earned their second straight victory, defeating Air Force (3-3) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"It was the best win in GCU men's tennis history since we reinstated the team seven years ago," said head coach Greg Prudhomme.
"I've been preaching to the guys that they're getting better from match-to-match even though we've taken some losses early on in the season," Prudhomme explained. "To beat a team that we lost to 6-1 last year and win at their place in the altitude and with a large home crowd is the living proof that this team is getting better and we can beat strong DI teams."
In doubles, Grand Canyon edged out the Falcons with victories at two and three. After splitting the first and third matches,
Felix Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp clenched the doubles' victory by winning the tiebreaker for their match. This marked the duo's third straight win this season.
Meidy Chazeau and
Gregoire Balenci earned the other win for the Lopes (6-4).
The Lopes went 4-2 in singles. Schueller won his third consecutive match by defeating Grant Taylor 6-3, 7-6 at the first position.
Roggenkamp and
Adrian Legarreta both had three-set matches against their opponents. Roggenkamp won his match over Lucas Fumagalli 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 while Legaretta won his 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Philip Kuehnen earned straight-sets victory over Dillon Launius to attain the Lopes' final point. Â
"It's a great day for GCU men's tennis," continued Prudhomme. "It was a strong team effort and there is not one person to single out. Air Force put up a strong fight—we knew they would—and it could have gone either way, but the fact that our entire team put in the effort that they did is how we got the win."
The Lopes will take on the Citadel tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Colorado Springs. A full recap of the event will be available at
