Box Score (PDF) PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team hosted its first Western Athletic Conference home match of the season against Chicago State. Deseree Doty highlighted an amazing night for the Antelopes as the freshman tied the WAC record for most goals in a game, scoring four goals in the 7-1 defeat over Chicago State.
"It is an indescribable feeling to score four goals in a game," Doty said. "I wanted to work hard for my team and it feels great because I play for my teammates and I wanted to make them proud."
The Lopes scored their earliest goal of the season in the seventh minute from Milla Benedetti. Cassie Beckwith was able to take a few dribbles into the corner and served up a great ball into the middle of the box where Benedetti was able to get a leg on the ball for her fifth goal of the season.
The Lopes would extend their lead in the 34
th minute off a goal from Doty. As the ball found its way to GCU's backline, Kathryn Yancone served up a ball from midfield right atop of the box for Doty to make a run leaving a one-on-one opportunity for Doty to score her second career goal at GCU. Right before the half would end, Doty would give GCU three goals in the 44
th minute scoring for her second goal of the game.
GCU ended the first half with 21 shots and 12 on goal while holding Chicago State to just one shot.
"It was nice to play at home on a beautiful night here in Phoenix," head coach Stevie Gill said. "We moved the ball exceptionally well in the first half and created some fantastic chances throughout the game."
Beckwith was knocking on the door all night long looking for a goal and she answered early in the second half. After a few headers hitting the crossbar, Beckwith scored in the 48
th minute off a corner kick from Yancone where she would put in a header far post for her third goal of the season.
After Chicago State scored in the 50
th minute, GCU responded well by scoring in the 63
rd minute from Milla Benedetti. After finding the ball 35-yards out, Benedetti took a few dribbles for a shot on the right side of the field for a bending goal far post for her second goal of the game. In the 77
th minute Doty would complete her hat trick with a goal after receiving a pass from inside the box from Madison Cox. Doty would tack on a fourth goal in the 82
nd minute scoring off a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper.
"It was wonderful to see Des (Doty) get four goals and tie a WAC record," Gill said. "She was on point tonight and she scored some amazing goals."
Grand Canyon will close out its homestand on Sunday, Oct. 11, against Missouri-Kansas City at 1 p.m. at GCU Soccer Field.
"We enjoy tonight but now we look towards our match on Sunday against UMKC," Gill said.
