PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team finished the weekend with a 1-1 split against the WAC's top two clubs after the Lopes dropped a 4-0 match to Seattle U on Sunday at GCU Soccer Field.
GCU (7-9-2, 4-4-1 WAC) was shut out for the third time this season while Seattle U (12-2-3, 7-0-2) remains undefeated and alone in first place in the Western Athletic Conference.
After 20 scoreless minutes, Seattle U broke the seal on the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute. Summer Mason crossed the ball to Julia Moravec in the middle who completed the scoring play to put the Redhawks up 1-0.
In the 30th minute, Seattle U took advantage of a deep throw-in to score for the second time. Moravec – who scored the Redhawks first goal – crossed the ball to Kyla Danforth who found the back of the net.
Seattle U ended the first half with seven shots compared to the Lopes' four.
Seattle U put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals in the 68th and 69th minutes. After recording an assist on the second goal of the game, Moravec also assisted on the Redhawks' third and fourth goals, giving her three assists for the day.
Blakely Fraasch did her best to limit the Seattle U attack for the Lopes, finishing with seven saves in goal.
Grand Canyon will end the 2015 campaign with one final home match, hosting Cal State Bakersfield (5-11-2, 3-5-1 WAC) on Saturday, Oct. 31 at GCU Soccer Field.
