The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team won for the fifth straight time, today defeating Montana, 4-3, at the Caughlin Club in Reno, Nev. It marked the third 4-3 win for the 'Lopes this season.
The win improved the Antelopes to 7-3; Montana fell to 3-5.
For only the fourth time in 10 matches, GCU secured the doubles point and headed into the singles with a 1-0 advantage.
Alexander Roggenkamp and
Benjamin Collomb picked up an 8-7 win at No. 2 doubles, while the No. 3 pair of
Nicolas Moulin and
Adrian Legarreta recorded an 8-6 win at No. 3.
"We sure had our hands full with Montana who lost a close match against a very good Nevada team last night," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "All of the matches came down to the end in the doubles round. Montana served for the match in the No. 2 doubles match, but our guys were able to prevail. The close losses we have had in the doubles this season certainly aided us in this one."
The Antelopes and the Grizzlies split the six singles matches with GCU winning at the 4-6 positions.
Felix Schueller and Collomb won convincingly in straight sets. Roggenkamp won his match by taking a first set tiebreaker and then closing out the contest by winning the second set 6-2. All three have now won four in a row in singles play. Collomb has seven wins this season, the most of any Antelope player.
"In singles play we did it in our typical style by showing great effort and attitude," added Prudhomme. "This is a great full team effort which will continue to build our confidence and leads me to believe they can continue to do it, as we know we will have more of these to come."
Grand Canyon will be back in action tomorrow when they face Nevada for the second time this season. Nevada swept GCU 7-0 on Feb. 17 in Glendale, Ariz.
