The Grand Canyon University softball team opened up play at the UCLA/CSUN Invitational on Friday in Northridge, Calif., defeating Georgetown (7-8) by a final score of 9-3, before dropping a 2-0 decision to tournament host Cal State Northridge (10-8) in its second game of the day. After splitting their games on Friday, the Antelopes move their 2014 record to 10-10.
Game One
After drilling a home run in the first inning of Wednesday night's game,
Kelsey Barak continued her terror at the plate Friday morning, connecting on a pair of home runs. The shortstop, playing in her home state of California, finished the morning affair 3-for-3 at the plate, accounted for three runs scored, and tallied three RBI. She now has four bombs on the season.
Grand Canyon held a tight 4-2 lead heading into the final frame before breaking open the game in the top of the seventh, scoring five times to extend its lead to 9-2. The Hoyas pushed across one run in the home half of the inning but were unable to edge any closer, giving Canyon the 9-3 victory.
Kailey Regester accumulated her fifth win of the season in the circle, hurling the first four innings for GCU.
Kiki Sepulveda picked up the save in relief, as the California native gave up just one earned run in her three innings of work.
Stephanie Smith had a pair of hits and also recorded an RBI.
McKensey Madsen picked up her first collegiate hit in the game and also finished with a run scored and an RBI.
"We were able to get the bats going against Georgetown and kept them on their heels all afternoon," said head coach Ann Pierson. "Our speed really played a factor in the game and we did a good job on the base paths."
Game Two
The 'Lopes were unable to string anything together at the plate in their second game of the day and fell to Cal State Northridge, 2-0.
The Matadors scored twice in the first inning and then were held in check the rest of the way by GCU starting pitcher
Stephanie Pesqueira.
Pesqueira was tagged with the loss, going the distance in the circle, striking out four and giving up the game's only two runs in the first frame. The reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week is now 3-5 on the season.
"Peski threw a great game and I was pleased with the pitching and defense," added Pierson. "They are a good team and their pitcher did a really good job mixing speeds and locating her pitches."
After tallying her first collegiate hit in game one, McKensey Madsen recorded a pair of hits in the matinee.
Nicole Newbury and
Annie Jordan each contributed by picking up a base knock in three attempts at the plate.
"Our kids battled all day and I am really pleased with our effort and the way we played," concluded Pierson. "As always we will have to get ready to compete at a high level again tomorrow."
The 'Lopes will head back to Matador Diamond tomorrow for games against Oregon State (7-11) at 1 p.m. (Arizona Time) and Cal State Northridge at 4 p.m. (Arizona Time). Fans can check
