For the second consecutive day, the Grand Canyon University softball team split its games at the UCLA/CSUN Invitational in Northridge, Calif. The Antelopes blanked Oregon State (8-12) in their first game of the day, 3-0, before falling to Cal State Northridge (12-8) in the second game of the day, 8-1. With Saturday's split, Grand Canyon moves its record to 11-11.
Game One
The contest, which was dominated by both squads' starting pitchers, remained scoreless until the top of fourth inning when
Kelsey Barak reached on an Oregon State throwing error with two outs. Two batters later the 'Lopes capitalized on the miscue, as
Stephanie Smith tripled to left center, scoring
Nicole Newbury and Barak, giving the 'Lopes a 2-0 lead.
The 'Lopes picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Kiki Sepulveda, who was pinch running for
Lauren Regester, scored on a
Camree Wartman RBI single to advance the Canyon lead to 3-0. Regester previously walked in the frame.
The two pitchers gave up a combined six hits during the mid-day affair, with Oregon State owning the advantage at the plate, tallying four hits to Canyon's two.
Stephanie Pesqueira had another great outing in the circle for Canyon, as the senior right-hander and reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week threw a complete-game shutout. Pesqueira surrendered just four hits and struck out a pair of Beavers on her way to picking up her fourth win of the season.
"Peski was outstanding and the defense was phenomenal behind her," said head coach Ann Pierson. "She (Pesqueira) didn't allow them to string anything together and everyone did their job behind her and shut down their small ball game."
"Really proud of the girls for their effort against Oregon State and the way they battled against a very tough opponent," Pierson added.
Game Two
For the second straight day, GCU fell to tournament host Cal State Northridge in its afternoon affair. The Matadors used dominant pitching from Brianna Elder again on Saturday to shut down the Canyon attack at the plate.
The 'Lopes were able to pick up one run in the top of the fifth when
Kayla Henry singled to left field, scoring pinch runner
Claire Zampini. Henry's base knock was one of three hits in the inning, as Lauren Regester and Camree Wartman also contributed singles in the frame.
Henry posted another single in the seventh to finish 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lauren Regester also finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kailey Regester suffered the loss in the circle, moving her 2014 record to 5-2. Sepulveda and
Taylor Nowlin pitched two and three innings, respectively, in relief.
"We will have to be ready to go again right away tomorrow, as Oregon State will be looking to get us back after today's win," concluded Pierson.
The 'Lopes will conclude play at the UCLA/CSUN Invite tomorrow when they take on Oregon State at 9 a.m. (Arizona Time). Fans can find a link for live stats at
