The Grand Canyon University softball team wrapped up play at the UCLA/CSUN Invitational today in Northridge, Calif., with a 6-3 loss to Oregon State (9-12). The Antelopes went 2-3 over the weekend and are now 11-12 on the season.
"We gave them too many chances today," said head coach Ann Pierson. "You can't give good teams extra opportunities at this level because they will capitalize."
Oregon State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first and added another run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The 'Lopes cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the frame.
With the bases loaded,
Kayla Henry smacked an RBI single to center field, scoring
Nicole Newbury.
Lauren Regester also scored on the play after an Oregon State throwing error, making the score 3-2.
The Beavers scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2. Canyon was able to scratch across one run in the bottom of the seventh when Henry scored on a
McKensey Madsen hit. Madsen was then thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double and that is how the game ended.
After hurling a complete-game shutout against the Beavers on Saturday,
Stephanie Pesqueira was back in the circle for the 'Lopes on Sunday. The senior right-hander suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs in six innings of action before
Kiki Sepulveda came in and pitched a scoreless seventh. With the loss, Pesqueira's record moves to 4-6.
Henry finished 2-for-3 at the plate, tallied an RBI, and scored a run.
"I was pleased with this weekend for the most part," concluded Pierson. "Overall this is the toughest weekend we have had this year and our girls battled tough every game for the most part."
The 'Lopes will now be off until they travel back to California to take part in the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin March 21-23. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2014 softball season at
