After being idle for the last 10 days, the Grand Canyon University softball team returned to the diamond today, dropping a pair of decisions to California (14-11) in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears used a walk-off home run in game one to defeat the Antelopes, 5-4, and then knocked off GCU in game two by a final score of 7-1. Grand Canyon is now 11-14 on the season.
"Peski threw a great game and we played well overall," said head coach Ann Pierson. "We swung our bats well in game one."
Game One
Grand Canyon got on the board early, scoring three times in the top of the second.
Nicole Newbury scored on a
Stephanie Smith RBI fielder's choice.
Camree Wartman then smacked her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center, to give the 'Lopes a 3-0 lead.
Cal scratched across a run in the bottom of the second, fourth, and fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
The 'Lopes regained the lead in the top of the sixth when
Stephanie Pesqueira scored on a
Claire Zampini RBI double, giving GCU a 4-3 advantage.
The game ended in the home half of the seventh on a Cal walk-off two-run home run.
Smith finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, knocked in a run, and accounted for a run scored. Zampini collected two hits in game one as well.
Pesqueira was tagged with the loss in the circle, striking out four in six innings of work. The senior hurler is 4-7 on the season.
Game Two
After a heartbreaking loss in game, GCU fell to Cal in the second game of the twin bill, 7-1.
The 'Lopes got their lone run in the top of the seventh on a
Haley Walker solo home run. The bomb marked as the first round-tripper for the Canyon leadoff hitter this season.
Newbury and

Kelsey Barak tallied a base knock in game two.
Kailey Regester suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering six earned runs in five innings of action. Regester now holds a 5-3 record in 2014.
Taylor Nowlin struck out a Cal batter in her one inning of relief work.
"Taylor threw a good sixth and it was great to see Haley hit her first home run of the season," concluded Pierson. "We need to hit the ground running tomorrow and get two wins to start the tournament off."
The 'Lopes will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of games at the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin in Santa Clara, Calif. GCU will take on Princeton at 3:30 (Arizona Time) and California at 6 p.m. (Arizona Time) at the SCU Softball Field. Fans can find a link for live stats and complete game recaps at
