After dropping a pair of games on Thursday to California, the Grand Canyon University softball team bounced back with a 9-2 win over Princeton (5-12) on Friday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif., and then fell to Cal (15-11) in the nightcap, 11-1. After splitting their games on Friday, the Antelopes now hold a 12-15 record in 2014.
Game One
Grand Canyon didn't waste any time getting on the board, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play.
Lauren Regester drilled an RBI double in the opening frame, scoring
Kelsey Barak and giving GCU a 1-0 lead.
In inning two,
Haley Walker drove in
Claire Zampini and
Camree Wartman on a single to right field, moving the lead to 3-0. The 'Lopes weren't done at the dish, as Barak and
Nicole Newbury each picked up an RBI before the inning came to an end.
The Tigers picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Barak and Lauren Regester both smashed doubles in the top of the sixth, plating three more runs and moving the lead to 8-2.
The 'Lopes picked up one more run in the top of the seventh on a Walker RBI double.
Barak tallied three hits and Lauren Regester and Walker laced two hits in the matinee.
Stephanie Pesqueira picked up her fifth win of the year in the circle, hurling all seven innings. The senior right-hander struck out one Tiger batter, while allowing only two runs.
"Peski threw well, she was able to keep them (Princeton) off balance and hit good locations," said head coach Ann Pierson. "I was pleased with the way we swung our bats and the adjustments we made from Thursday to Friday at the plate."
Game Two
After being defeated twice on Thursday night, GCU fell victim to Cal again on Friday, dropping an 11-1 decision to the Golden Bears.
The 'Lopes got out to an early lead once again, scratching across a run in the home half of the first on a Barak sacrifice fly, scoring Walker and putting GCU up 1-0.
Cal would answer with a seven-run third inning, giving the Golden Bears a 7-1 lead. A pair of Cal home runs in the fourth pushed its lead to 11-1.
Wartman and Walker both connected on a double in Friday's second game.
Kailey Regester suffered the loss, giving up seven runs in 2.2 innings of work.
Taylor Nowlin came in and pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief.
"We hit the ball hard and they made some great plays in the field," added Pierson. "Cal is a very solid team both at the plate and in the field and we lacked leadership in the circle and that hurt us."
"I was very pleased with our approach at the plate and how we battled from start to finish today," concluded Pierson. "We need to go out and pick up a pair of wins tomorrow."
The 'Lopes will continue their action at the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin tomorrow with contests against host Santa Clara at 12 p.m. (Arizona Time) and Princeton at 5 p.m. (Arizona Time). Fans can follow all of the action from Santa Clara via a link for live stats at
