Grand Canyon dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to Idaho this afternoon in front of an impressive gathering at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The loss snapped GCU's five-match win streak and brought their overall record to 11-6. Idaho, who recently fell out of the ITA National Rankings, improved to 14-3.
The match was tightly contested from the start as the three doubles matches took almost 90 minutes to be completed. GCU lost the doubles point, but did record a win as the No. 1 tandem of
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won 8-6 over the Vandals' squad of Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz, who are currently ranked No. 8 in the Mountain Region.
While unable to earn a singles point, the Antelopes were close in many of the matches. Prudhomme's match was stopped with her leading 7-5, 4-2. Annoual won her first set 6-4 and was down by a close margin of 5-6 in the second before play was halted.
Silvia Tumova dropped her first set, before rallying to a 6-2 second set win. She was trailing 2-3 in the third at the stoppage.
"The girls lost a tough one, but I am very proud of their effort," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We had a tough turnaround, playing two this weekend and arriving home after 9 p.m. last night, then playing at 10 a.m. this morning. We certainly had our chances to take the doubles point and were in a solid position with the unfinished singles matches. This was much closer than the score would indicate. We have a little time before our last road trip, so we will rest up, practice hard and be ready to go."
The women will next be in action on April 24 and 25, when they face Abilene Christian and Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, Neb.
