The Grand Canyon tennis teams wrapped up a perfect 4-0 weekend in Edinburg. Tex. with a sweep over Western Athletic Conference foe Kansas City at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The GCU men improved to 6-3 after winning their fourth straight, 4-1 over UMKC. The Roos fell to 3-9.
In similar fashion to last night's win over Texas Pan American, the Antelopes entered singles play after losing the doubles point.
Nicolas Moulin returned to the winning ways with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over the Roos' Mike Psarros.
Ahmad Saleem snapped a two-match skid with a solid 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 2 position.
Adrian Legarreta won for the fourth-straight time, today taking his No. 3 singles match 7-5, 6-1.
GCU received its fourth win by
Benjamin Collomb at No. 5. He jumped out quickly with a 6-0 opening set win. After dropping the second set 3-6, Collomb cruised to a 6-2 win in the third to improve his overall record 6-2.
"The guys pulled off another big win," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "It feels great to be 3-0 in the WAC and the guys had to come from behind again. It was great to see our top two spots in singles rebound today after losses yesterday. UMKC won their conference last year and made it to the NCAA's. So this is a big win for us."
The GCU women also improved to 6-3, winning their fifth straight with a 4-0 victory over the Roos. UMKC dropped to 4-9.
The Antelopes started quickly by taking the doubles point.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while
Janaki Gunuganti and
Frederique Van de Velde won 8-3 in the No. 2 position.
Prudhomme had a big day with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 2 singles. She is now 6-2 overall and has won her last six straight.
Gunuganti won for the seventh-straight match, today winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Van de Velde recorded her first win of the season, sweeping to a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.
"The girls played great and maintained all the way through," added Prudhomme. "The score tonight was not indicative of the tough fight we had. It was long match and we had to finish under the lights. I'm proud of them and they are establishing themselves as strong team in this conference."
The women will be off next weekend, but the men will travel to Reno, Nev. for two contests. They will face Montana on March 8 and then play Nevada on March 9. Nevada swept the 'Lopes 7-0 on Feb. 17 in Glendale.
