The Grand Canyon University baseball team (4-7) dropped a pair of games today at the Bourland-Ardoin Classic, falling 11-1 to Kansas State (3-7) and 3-2 in 10 innings to host Abilene Christian (6-2) at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Tex. The game versus Abilene Christian was the first extra-inning contest of the young season for the Antelopes.
In the day's first game, GCU starter
Andrew Naderer was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Naderer is now 1-2 on the season.
David Walker,
Brandon Smith, and
Paul Panaccione collected two hits apiece in the first game to lead the offense.
"I thought we played well in the first game for six innings," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We gave ourselves a chance for most of that game. Andrew is getting better - his first two starts weren't what we thought were really him. But he is going to be fine. It was good to see him get back to what we know he can do."
Against Kansas State, who the 'Lopes also met yesterday in the classic opener, the teams traded zeroes until the Wildcats broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a double down the left field line after the first two batters reached via a walk and single.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the next frame after the leadoff man singled and scored on a triple by the following the batter. A sacrifice fly to center made it a 4-0 game.
GCU got on the board in the sixth inning after Panaccione led off the frame with a single down the left field line, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and crossed home on a groundout off the bat of
Humberto Aranda.
Kansas State scored once in the seventh inning and used a big six-run eighth to pull away from the 'Lopes as the 11 runs were the most allowed by GCU this season.
"Kansas State hit us pretty well later in the game, like they did yesterday, so we have to be better out of the bullpen in terms of making the big pitches," Stankiewicz added.
In the day's second game against Abilene Christian, the 'Lopes scored first after
Matt Haggerty singled to open the second inning, moved to second base on a nicely placed sacrifice bunt by
Michael Pomeroy, and crossed home plate on
Ben Mauseth's RBI single up the middle.
Abilene Christian knotted the score at one in the bottom of the fourth after three straight two-out hits plated the Wildcats' first run.
After zeroes were put up by both teams over the next couple of innings, Abilene Christian scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left center in the seventh to take the 2-1 lead.
GCU had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth and took advantage of the opportunity to tie the score at two apiece on Pomeroy's RBI single up the middle to plate
Chad De La Guerra. The Wildcats threatened with baserunners on first and third and one out in their half of the inning, but the 'Lopes used a strikeout-caught stealing double play to end the frame.
Chris Lindmark and De La Guerra found themselves on second and third with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the Wildcats induced a groundout to keep the score tied at two. In the top of the 10
th,
Brian Kraft and Mauseth hit back-to-back two-out singles, but a strikeout ended GCU's threat.
The Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the 10
th and a single down the left field line gave Abilene Christian the walk-off win.
Â
Ethan Evanko, who got the starting nod against Abilene Christian, did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings to match his longest outing of the season. Reliever
Scott Serigstad was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing the winning run to score in the 10
th inning. For the contest, GCU stranded 12 runners on base.
"We had our opportunities in basically every inning in the second game," said Stankiewicz. "But we didn't take advantage of scoring opportunities. We left too many guys on base, and we couldn't get a hit when we needed it. Our bullpen did a good job in game two, and they made big pitches when we needed them to. Unfotunately, we didn't get the big hit and they (Abilene Christian) did."
Mauseth and De La Guerra led the offensive charge with two hits each. Mauseth finished with three hits between the two games today.
The 'Lopes will play their finale of the classic tomorrow against Missouri State at 10 a.m. (Arizona time). Fans can follow the action live by visiting

"We know that Missouri State is physical, so we have to be ready," said Stankiewicz. "They are aggressive, and will have to have an answer for that."
