The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Nevada this afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The loss drops GCU to 2-3, while the Wolf Pack improved to 5-1.
The Antelopes continued the trend of playing some tough, competitive matches in their debut season in Division I.
The Antelopes' No. 3 doubles pairing of
Benjamin Collomb and
Alexander Roggenkamp grabbed an early lead which led to an 8-4 victory. That pairing is now 3-1 on the season and has the best doubles record of any GCU duo this season.
GCU battled in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches, falling 8-5 in each to give the Wolf Pack the early 1-0 lead.
While not able to capture a match in the singles round for the first time this season, GCU did force the action on a number of courts.
Nicolas Moulin , playing at No. 1 singles, lost the opening set in a tiebreaker (5-7), before returning the favor by winning in a second set tiebreaker (7-3) over Nevada's Moez Echargui. With the overall match winner decided, the two played a match tiebreaker in the third with Echargui prevailing 10-6.
Adrian Legarreta and Collomb lost opening set tiebreakers that might have changed the course of their respective matches. Each would lose in straight sets. For Collomb, the loss snapped his three-game winning streak.
Roggenkamp started his No. 5 singles match quickly, winning his opening set at Love. He was unable to close the match, losing 2-6, 3-6 in the next two sets.
Senior
Jacob Spizman got the call at No. 6 singles and competed well in a 4-6, 5-7 loss.
Grand Canyon will be back in action on Feb. 22 when they face fellow Western Athletic Conference member Chicago State in Homewood, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (AZ time).
