The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Loyola Marymount today at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The loss drops GCU to 2-2, while LMU improved to 3-1.
"It was a tough loss today and the score was not indicative of how close the fight was," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "The great news is that LMU is a very good team out of the West Coast Conference who is known for their tennis program. These close loses will eventually turn into wins against these type of teams. While it is hard to lose, I am seeing a lot of positives."
The Antelopes lost the doubles point, dropping two of the three matches. The No. 3 pairing of
Benjamin Collomb and
Alexander Roggenkamp won their match 6-2, improving their record together to 2-1 this season.
GCU dropped five of the six singles matches, but were competitive across the board.
Collomb picked up his third straight singles win with a victory in straight sets. He needed a first tiebreak to take the opening set and then cruised in the second, winning 6-0.
One day after his thrilling come-from-behind win, Roggenkamp once again went three sets, this time in a losing effort. He won the first set 6-1, before falling by the same count in the second set. Roggenkamp then lost 6-5 in the final set that needed a tiebreaker to decide it (7-3).
Nicolas Moulin at No. 1 singles and
Ahmad Saleem at No. 2, both fell in straight sets, each playing tiebreakers in the second set. Moulin had a set point on his racquet in the second set, while Saleem was serving for the second set at 5-4.
Grand Canyon now heads home where they will play their lone home match of the season this Monday against Nevada at the
Paseo Racquet Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Nevada is 3-1 with a 6-1 win over Riverside earlier this season, a side GCU beat 5-2 yesterday. The Wolfpack will play Arizona in Tucson tomorrow.
