The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team ran their record to 2-1 after a 5-2 win over UC Riverside at Andulka Park in Riverside, Calif.
"The guys had a great win today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "Anytime we can win on the road against a D-I team in our inaugural season is a great sign that we are headed in the right direction. We had to do it from behind after dropping the doubles point and trailed on a few singles courts as well. It really shows the attitude and effort of our players. It will be a short celebration as we hit the courts again tomorrow."
Falling behind 1-0 after losing the doubles points, GCU rallied to win five of the six singles matches.
Highlighting the day and making a bid for match of the year, was
Alexander Roggenkamp's win at No. 6 singles. Roggenkamp was down a set and trailed 5-1 in the second set with Riverside's Sean Yun serving at 40-Love. Roggenkamp would stave off six match points, eventually rallying to win the set 6-5 (7-3), before controlling the third 6-2, to pick up the win.
Nicolas Moulin won his first match of the season at No. 1 singles. After losing in the opening set, Moulin stormed back to win the next two 6-4, 6-4.
Ahmad Saleem,
Felix Schueller and
Benjamin Collomb all won in straight sets. For Collomb, he has now won two straight.
Grand Canyon will face Loyola Marymount tomorrow at the LMU Tennis Center with the match beginning at Noon (AZ time).
