The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team fell 6-1 today to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Air Force improved to 2-0 on the season, while GCU falls to 1-1. The Antelopes defeated Abilene Christian 4-3 yesterday, also in Colorado Springs.
"The guys had a tough match today and it is unfortunate that we lost," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "The score is not indicative of how the match was contested. There were four matches where the competition was fierce and we had match points in two of them that we didn't close out. We certainly had our hands full with a good team, playing indoors and at altitude. I'm proud of our effort and attitude and feel if we keep doing the things we are doing that we can get to their level and beyond."
GCU picked up its lone win of the day at No. 5 singles as
Benjamin Collomb won a tightly contested match against the Falcons' Grant Taylor. Collomb won the opening set in a tiebreaker (7-3) and took the second set by a 6-4 count.
The Antelopes had opportunities to make the match even closer, dropping tough decisions at both No. 1 and No. 6 singles.
Nicolas Moulin won his opening set 6-1 in the top singles affair and had a match point in the second set before dropping that one in a tiebreaker (7-2).
Alexander Roggenkamp also had a match point opportunity in the No. 6 singles slot. He battled back to win the second set after losing the opener, but was unable to close out his match, falling 11-9 in a match tiebreaker.
GCU will be off until Feb.14 when they will face UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif. The following day they will play at Loyola Marymount.
