The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team began their inaugural Division I campaign with a 4-3 neutral site victory over Abilene Christian today in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"We are very excited to win our first Division I match of the season," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "It was a hard fought match and our guys needed to use both their mental toughness as well as their skill to get the job done. It is a big win on a lot of levels. Doing it on the road and in our first D-I season against a team that has been strong for many years is very special."
Felix Schueller led the Antelopes with a pair of wins, taking the No. 3 singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Earlier in the day he teamed with
Arjun Bal to win the No. 1 doubles match by virtue of their 7-5 win in the match tiebreak. That win earned the one doubles point that can be obtained in D-I scoring.
Alexander Roggenkamp's match at No. 6 singles proved to be the clincher. He trailed 1-4 in the opening set before storming back to win 6-4 and then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set.
Adrian Legarreta did not drop a game at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0 in the first and leading 2-0 in the second before his opponent retired.
Grand Canyon will be back in action tomorrow when they face the host Air Force Falcons at 10 a.m.
