Grand Canyon forced a fourth set, but were unable to rebound from dropping the first two in a 3-1 loss to Texas Tech (2-1) at the Wildcat Weekend at Swenson Gym on the campus of Weber State in Ogden, Utah, Saturday.
GCU (0-2) lost by set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20.
"I'm not satisfied to go 0-2, but overall we saw some positives and we saw what we have to work on," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "We'll get better each time we go out."
The Antelopes got off to a strong start and led 20-15 in the first set before the Big 12 Conference foe finished with the final 10 points. Down 2-0, GCU got a spark from its bench to win the third set.
Britta Forsythe had five kills in the third, while frosh setter
Bree Davis had a pair of block assists and a kill. Nine of 13 third-set kills came from bench players.
Kaitlynn Ausmus had two and frosh
Hannah Hankins had one. GCU hit .275 for the set.
"They brought some energy off the bench, a little fire and spark," added Naber.
For the match, Forsythe and
Hayleigh Friemoth led the Antelopes with 11 kills each. Ausmus had nine kills with just one error (.276).
Lanie Muys, who was named to the all-tournament team, had seven kills on 16 tries with just one error (.375). Muys and Davis each had three block assists.
Three Antelopes hit double figures in digs with libero
Mackenzie Phelps leading the way with 15. Setter
Jessica Posse had 13 and Friemoth completed her double-double with 12 digs. Posse also had 25 assists.
Texas Tech hit .322 (67-18-152), while GCU hit .199 (47-18-146), a significant improvement after hitting -.005 in a five-set loss to Weber State Friday. The Red Raiders won the battle of digs 72-61. The Antelopes were aided by 15 Texas Tech service errors.
GCU is back in action next week with four contests at the University of Nevada tournament in Reno. The Antelopes get a rematch with Weber State at 10 a.m. Friday. They take on Illinois State at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 7, GCU plays UC Davis at 11:30 p.m. and host Nevada at 6 p.m.
