FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Grand Canyon fell 3–1 on Thursday evening at Colorado State despite opening the match with first-set victory.
Even with the loss, the Lopes will fight for a postseason title next week in their debut in one of the nation's top eight volleyball conferences, The Lopes clinched through tiebreakers which included head-to-head from conference play.
The Lopes opened the match against CSU with an efficient offensive frame, hitting .349 with 19 kills. Senior
Anaelena Ramirez led the early charge and ultimately finished the match with 14 kills on .220.
Grduate
Sophia Parlanti added consistent production throughout the evening, closing with 11 kills
on .375 hitting.
Timely serving runs from setters
Bella Nunez and
Taylor Kubacak helped maintain the first-set lead, as Nunez finished with 20 assists, seven digs, and a service ace, while Kubacak totaled 22 assists five digs, and an ace.
Parlanti secured the set with a final kill, giving GCU a 25–22 advantage.
Colorado State reversed momentum immediately in the second set.
The Lopes struggled to establish rhythm offensively, managing only nine kills with seven errors.
Defensively, libero
Bella Anderson contributed 15 digs with little defensive help.
CSU's pressure evened the match 1–1.
The third set emerged as the tightest of the evening. GCU erased an early deficit and tied the score at 17–17 behind key swings from
Aubrey Bellus, Parlanti, and Ramirez.
Sophomore middle blocker
Aubrey Goodere was a positive from the match after bouncing back from last week to tally nine kills on .412 hitting.
Despite the push, Colorado State closed the frame with a decisive 5–1 run to take the set 25–22.
Colorado State maintained that momentum in the fourth set, hitting .344 and producing multiple scoring stretches that created separation.
GCU received late kills and a spark off the bench from middle blocker Anna ruter but the Rams secured a 25–15 final to close the match.
Grand Canyon concluded the night with 52 total kills on .196 hitting while Colorado State countered with .444 efficiency and four players in double figures.
The Lopes will head to Laramie to take on Wyoming Saturday at 6 p.m. while looking to solidify the 5th seed heading into the postseason.
