The Grand Canyon University tennis teams split for the second straight, with the women taking home the win today against Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif.
“For the second straight day our tennis teams had a great battle,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “We added another first to our list of accomplishments as our women’s team beat APU for the first time in my tenure. We won five of the six singles matches to clinch it. The men’s took a 2-1 lead in the doubles, but Azusa was just a bit too tough. This is a road trip that we normally came away with no wins, but we picked up two in the four matches this weekend.”
The No. 13 women improved to 9-3 this season with their 6-3 win over No. 29 Azusa Pacific.
Priscilla Annoual, ranked No. 26, highlighted the women’s day with 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 17 Emily Harris. GCU’s team of
Lana Macukat and
Katharina Mittag won a thrilling doubles match at No. 2, 9-8(2).
The No. 13 men dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 11 APU and are now 6-3 overall.
GCU picked up a pair of doubles wins as
Alexander Roggenkamp and
Felix Schueller defeated No. 24 Frederik Wilken and Gary Yam 8-4, while
Meidy Chazeau and
Yann Kaelin won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Roggenkamp won the only singles match for the ‘Lopes, winning in straight sets at the No. 5 spot.
The men will travel to Colorado next week for matches against Colorado-Pueblo on March 14, Colorado Mesa on March 15 and Metro State on March 16. The women are off until March 28, when they will host D-I Idaho State.
