The 13
th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team returned from an 11-day layoff with a resounding 8-1 victory over Sonoma State today in San Diego, Calif.
The win improved the Antelopes’ overall record to 11-3, while the Seawolves fell to 3-15.
“The men’s team played a great match against Sonoma State today,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “We had a good performance from
Jacob Spizman at No. 3 doubles, filling in for
Ahmad Saleem. We also received strong matches at 5 and 6 singles.”
The men opened a 3-0 lead after the doubles round, highlighted by
Alexander Roggenkamp and
Felix Schueller's 8-0 win at the top spot.
GCU’
Meidy Chazeau and
Ramon Abaitua each won 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
Yann Kaelin cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
GCU dropped only 20 games in its eight wins this afternoon.
The men will face UC San Diego in a critical west region match on April 1 in San Diego. Last season, GCU snapped the Tritons’ 24-match regular season winning streak with a 7-2 win on Feb. 10, 2012 in Glendale, Ariz.
