Taylor Young rallied from a set down to win 6-4 in the third set, snapping a 4-4 match tie to give 13
th-ranked Grand Canyon a 5-4 win over 19
th-ranked UC San Diego today in San Diego, Calif.
The win was critical for the women in their bid for an NCAA tourney berth, while improving their overall record to 11-3. UCSD fell to 10-6.
“We played our longest match in the time that I have been at GCU on the women’s side, today going six and a half hours,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “It takes a team to win and I’m proud of the effort we had. The highlight was Taylor in her third ever start winning a match that went 3:50. It was a huge win and this is a big step in securing postseason play for us.”
The Antelopes trailed 2-1 after the doubles round, but picked up four wins in the singles to take the match.
Priscilla Annoual, ranked 16 in the latest national poll, cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Justine Majan won in straight sets, while
Lana Macukat won her match in three sets.
The 13
th-ranked GCU men’s team fell in their match with 28
th-ranked UCSD, 7-2.
The men fell to 11-4 overall, while UCSD improved to 9-8.
“We suffered a tough loss in the men’s side,” added Prudhomme. “The guys have stepped up a lot this season, but today we played a very experienced team and it showed. We came up a little short, but the guys learned a lot today and we hope to see that impact in our coming matches.”
The men received wins from
Meidy Chazeau and
Yann Kaelin at No.3 doubles.
Alexander Roggenkamp won the lone singles match, at No. 5, rallying to an 11-9 win in the third set. He won the opening set at love and dropped the second set 7-6.
The men will now travel to Austin, Tex. where they will have three matches in three days, beginning with Hawaii Pacific on April 4. The women are off until April 16 when they will face BYU-Hawaii in Laie.
