The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams each picked up dual wins over Point Loma today at the
Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
With the wins, the men improved to 4-0, with the women climbing to 3-0.
Point Loma got off to a quick start this afternoon in the men’s contest, taking two of the three doubles points.
Ahmad Saleem and
Arjun Bal picked up the lone doubles win, 8-5, in the No. 1 position.
GCU took five of the six singles points, with
Felix Schueller and Saleem winning in match tiebreaks. Schueller won his tiebreak 10-4, while Saleem used a 10-6 tiebreak to win at No. 3.
Alexander Roggenkamp, Bal and Schueller are all a perfect 4-0 to start the season.
Jacob Spizman has gone 3-0 to open his campaign.
“The men's team showed strong character coming from behind for the win after being down 1-2 in the doubles,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “This says a lot about the three freshmen that are in the line-up that they were able to stay composed and get the job done in singles. We always ask a lot out of these guys by playing so many matches on this season kick-off weekend, but it will toughen them up physically and mentally for the rest of the season.”
The women took a 2-1 lead after the doubles round winning at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Priscilla Annoual made quick work of her match, winning 6-0, 6-2 in the top singles match for the women.
Justine Majan won by an identical score at No. 3 singles.
The women are now a combined 17-1 in singles matches this season.
“On the women's side I didn't expect to beat a good Point Loma team with the 7-2 score that we earned,” added Prudhomme. “The girls have stayed very focused throughout their three dual match wins. It's as if each match is a continuation from the one before.”
The men will play their fifth match in four days tomorrow when they face Azusa Pacific at 3 p.m. The women are off tomorrow and will return to the court on Sunday to face Fresno Pacific at noon.
