The Grand Canyon University men’s and women's tennis team's wrapped up a second straight succesful day at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. today. The men improved to 3-0, while the women are now 2-0.
For the second straight day, the 14
th-ranked women picked up 9-0 win, today downing west region opponent Sonoma State. Yesterday the ladies only dropped eight total games in their nine matches, but saw some tougher tests this afternoon.
“The women exceeded my expectations today,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “It could have been closer than the final score, but they pulled out all of the close matches.”
GCU jumped out to a 3-0 after the doubles round, with
Frederique Van de Velde and
Jordan Bridges winning a close 9-7 match at the No. 3 doubles position.
Grand Canyon did not drop a set in the singles round, with Bridges once again coming away with a hard-fought victory. She won the opening set 7-6, prevailing 12-10 in the tiebreak. Bridges cruised to a win at love in the second set.
Katharina Mittag won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and has now only dropped two games in her two opening singles matches.
The No. 10 GCU men played well again today in defeating No. 30 Western New Mexico, 6-3.
“I knew we had a good chance at winning, but we expected a battle coming in to this,” added Prudhomme. “This is exactly what we need at this point in the season.”
GCU took two of three points in the doubles round, with Yann and Meidy winning 9-8 (4) at No.3.
Felix Schueller, in his first year with Canyon, knocked off the Mustangs’ Rodrigo Almeida, ranked 43
rd in the nation, 7-5, 6-4 in the top singles match.
Alexander Roggenkamp had arguably the most impressive day, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, picking up two wins and only dropping two games for the dual.
This evening under the lights at Paseo, the men cruised to a 9-0 win over Metro State.
Roggenkamp completed a 4-0 day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Jacob Spizman picked up his second win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 position.
The Antelope men will have a quick turnaround tomorrow with a contest against Point Loma at noon. The women will face Point Loma at 3 p.m.
